Members of the Australian team at the 2017 UCI BMX World Championships, both riders and their families, will be treated to an exclusive meet and greet with Australian BMX elite rider, Sam Willoughby.

Willoughby is one of Australia’s most decorated BMX riders, with impressive accolades next to his name including a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics and two world titles from 2012 and 2015. Willoughby was also a finalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics and has won countless pro races in the USA. He also won multiple junior world titles in his formative years.

Sadly a training accident at US Olympic Training Centre in Chula Vista last year left Willoughby with a life-changing spinal injury. Fracturing his vertebrae and severely compressing his spinal cord, surgeons were forced to remove his C6 vertebrae and replace it with a titanium cage.

In the time since Willoughby has inspired many with the dedication he shows to his rehabilitation program, regularly posting updates to social media himself, or via fiancée Alise Post. Commencing rehab in hospital, Willoughby was discharged from a specialist facility in January to undertake his rehabilitation program from his USA home. He continues increase the mobility in his arms and legs.

Out of the gym the 25-year-old started his own podcast, ‘Café Willoughby’ alongside good friend Tyler Brown of the USA. The YouTube webcast covers a variety of topics and features special guests each episode.
