The 2017 Australia Masters Games is regarded one of the premier and largest participation sporting events in the country. The biennial event will take place this year in Tasmania from October 21-28, where over 6,000 competitors are expected to compete across a range of sports, including BMX.
The main purpose of the Games is to encourage and engage the masters’ sports demographic by promoting the benefits of sport and a positive, active lifestyle. As the Australian Masters Games website states, it aims to demonstrate the myriad of attractions to sport like skill, achievement, competition, social interaction and satisfaction.
Australian cyclist and 1996 Olympian, Tim O’Shannessey will be competing in the Masters Cycling competition and is urging other Aussie’s to come and join him at this year’s games.
“There’s plenty for them to do over here as well over the week and I’m sure people will do days trips around the coast.”
The Masters Games BMX competition will be held at Wynyard BMX club from October 26-28 and will include 20”, cruiser and retro classes. The event is open to all BMX riders whether you are an ex-elite or just a beginner. As long as you meet the masters age requirement for the event of 30+, you’re good to go!

Wynyard BMX club will be hosting a junior competition during the same weekend to make the weekend an event for the whole family to enjoy and participate in together. More details will be released in the near future on the junior event via the BMX Australia Facebook and Wynyard BMX Club Facebook pages.
The town of Wynyard is situated a short two-hour drive from Launceston airport and sits along the north-west coastline of Tasmania. The scenic town is reason enough to attend this year’s competition. It is surrounded by sandy beaches, tranquil rainforests and heaps of fun activities – from the West Coast Wilderness Railway to Dip Falls.
As well as an extensive sporting schedule, the Games will also comprise of a variety of social events throughout the week, providing a festival atmosphere for competitors, visitors and the local community.
