The countdown to the second round of the BMXA national series is just around the corner with racers heading to the Gold Coast for what should be a fantastic day of racing on Saturday. Local Aussie champ Kira Hill provides us with an insight into the track and her preparation for a busy 2020.

Two years on from the last national series event at the track, Nerang BMX Club will close to 400 riders from nearly every state across the country in the heart of the Gold Coast.

One rider who knows the Nerang track better than most is Kira Hill, who is happier than most that the national series is back in her backyard.

“It’s great that the national series is back, it’s a fantastic track as it allows you to test and work on a variety of skills,” Hill said.

Hill is the current national champion for the 15 years girls and a big goal of hers for the 2020 year is to back this up at nationals in Launceston.

“Nationals is my main goal as I feel I can win again. Since the first national series round at Shepparton I’ve been training really hard to make sure I’m as ready as possible,” she said.

“I wasn’t at my peak at Shepparton as it was the start of the year but last week at the Queensland shootout series I felt really good and comfortable on the bike.”

Last year was another big one for the former world champion as she started competing in superclass events with the likes of Saya Sakakibara, Leanna Curtis and fellow Nerang rider Erin Lockwood.

BMX is not only big for Kira in the Hill family, with her older brother, Kyle competing on the men’s ledger. However, Kyle represents Ashmore BMX Club now, which has led to some sibling rivalry between the two.

“Yeah there is a little rivalry between us but it’s a minor issue, we try to help each other a lot, he’s much better at corners than me so I always ask him for tips,“ Kira said.

“I think I’m better at my gate starts than him though!”
