We have many BMX super mums… but the Possum is something else.

It is a well-known fact that BMX mums are passionate, loyal and completely dedicated to ensuring their children live for BMX.

The Nerang BMX Club has a very special BMX super mum who stops at nothing to make sure that new members are welcomed, events run smoothly, and the community spirit never falters. We are of course talking about Debbie ‘Possum’ Lockwood – January’s Legend of the Month.

Mother to Erin Lockwood, the 2018 elite women’s national champion, Debbie has been with the BMX club on the Gold Coast for over 15 years and has a very strong voice as a committee member for Queensland’s Southern BMX Zone.

“My mum is the first one down at the club in the afternoon and is always the last one to leave, hours after practice has finished, she would stay back and clean up until everything was perfect,” Erin said.

The mother/daughter bond between the Lockwood’s is one of our favourite stories and we were lucky enough to sit down with the pair during the fourth round of the 2018 BMXA BAD BOY National Series at their club.

Enjoy their story.

Alongside working as Nerang’s canteen convener, Possum also does a lot of work behind the scenes at events and gate nights. Recently, the proud BMX mum worked tirelessly with the Nerang team to produce the Nerang Nats, one of the first events on 2019 calendar, and it resulted in her needing medical attention.

“Nerang Nats was crazy this year! Erin continued.

“Mum was working so hard that she got sick, it even hospitalised her, but she didn’t let that stop her as she tried to continue helping before getting sent home.

“She spent the night in hospital with an infection in her leg, and they pumped her full of antibiotics. No doubt when she’s fit and healthy again, she’ll be back in the canteen and helping to run our club.

The Nerang BMX Club is very lucky to have such a hardworking, dedicated person helping out wherever she can. Having a friendly person such as Possum welcome new members to the BMX Club is such a benefit for all involved.

Many people continually voice their praise for the BMX super mum, but none compare to the love and admiration shared by Erin.

“There isn’t an event that goes by that mum hasn’t helped at. She is always there to lend a helping hand and she definitely deserves the recognition for it… proud daughter here!” Erin finished.

Congratulations Debbie and we look forward to having more of your sweet chilli chicken wraps soon!
