It’s back to business in 2020 as gates have begun to drop around the country and what better way to kick off Tales from the Berm than with the Nerang Nationals…

After a relaxing holiday period enjoying the festive season and celebrating the New Year, the Nerang BMX Club on Australia’s Gold Coast decided it was time to get back on the cranks and open 2020 with a spectacular event.

The Nerang Nats played host to over 330 entries with riders from Queensland and beyond, ensuring the year was kicked off in style.

First out of the gate was the Dash for Cash time trial which took place across Friday and Saturday for both men and women over the age of 14.

Blitzing the pack in the men was Knox’s Josh McLean, with the national champion Izaac Kennedy in second and Ipswich’s Matt Krasevskis in third. It was great effort from these riders who took on Dutch world champion Twan Van Gendt and flew through the track.

On the women’s ledger, Beenleigh’s junior elite national champion Des’Ree Barnes took the top spot with home dirt hero Erin Lockwood in second and dual-Olympian Caroline Buchanan returning to Aussie competition to finish third.

It was bar banging racing that followed the time trial as riders from as young as 8-years of age looked to kick off their competitive year in exciting fashion.

Producing eye catching performances and sending messages to their competitors for events such as the national championships and the national series were the clean sweepers. (ENTER NOW FOR BMXA’s EVENTSHERE)

Making full use of their home track advantage were some Nerang riders with Harrison Regan (9-boy’s), Cheralee White (13-girl’s) and Ashley Williard (30-39 women’s cruiser) all dominating their classes.

Joining them on the clean sweepers list from fellow Queensland clubs were Penni Allen (9-girl’s) and Molly Williamson (10-girl’s and 8-10 girl’s cruiser) from Redlands, Callum Woodbury (14-boy’s and 13-14 boy’s cruiser) from Ashmore, Nate Argent (12-boy’s) from Ipswich, and Lachlan Jeffs (11-12 boy’s cruiser) from Townsville.

Adding to the list were some of the more experienced classes, with NSW’s national champ Glen Swain from Clarence Valley winning the 30-39 men’s cruiser, Tom McClellan from Centenary Plains taking out the 40-49 men’s cruiser, and Bayside’s Letitia Weatherhead claiming the 40-49 women’s cruiser.

A special mention goes to Taylah Maurice from Jingili, NT, who dominated her Queensland rivals in the 17-24 women’s class to sit atop the podium.

Rounding out the clean sweepers list was the ever impressive Des’Ree Barnes, who lined up on the women’s superclass gate and never looked back as she finished first ahead of Nerang’s Kira Hill and Erin Lockwood.

Josh McLean replicated his success from the time trial to claim the men’s superclass, beating home Ipswich’s Matt Krasevskis and Logan City’s Izaac Kennedy.
