The Freestyle BMX Nationals will be held as part of an exciting weekend of cycling in Brisbane which will include the 2019-2020 TISSOT UCI Track Cycling World Cup at Brisbane’s Anna Meares Velodrome from December 13-15, and the Cycling Australia Cyclist of the Year Awards Dinner on 16 December.

Set to make its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the exhilarating discipline of cycling involves riders performing a series of tricks during their ‘1 minute run’ across a ramp-filled course, with their tricks judged based on difficulty, originality, style and execution.

The inaugural Freestyle BMX Nationals held in Melbourne in 2018 was won by 2018 World Championship medalist Brandon Loupos.

Brisbane’s 2017 world champion Logan Martin keen to contest a Nationals on his newly renovated hometown track.

“I’m excited for the Nationals to be held at Beenleigh this year, not only because I grew up locally to Beenleigh but because of the recent rebuild of the skatepark,” said Martin.

“Unfortunately last year I was injured so I had to miss a few events including the Nationals, so my goal in 2019 is to not only attend the Nationals but to ride my best and take home the green and gold.

“I’m always doing my best at every event but now these events have a lot more importance as Tokyo Olympic team selection is coming up very quickly.”

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the 2019 Freestyle BMX Nationals would be a welcome addition to the cycling events to be held in Greater Brisbane.

“Greater Brisbane will be an exciting hub of cycling this December and I encourage athletes and fans attending the TISSOT UCI Track Cycling World Cup and Freestyle BMX Nationals to make the most of all there is to see and do in the region,” Cr Schrinner said.

The Championships will also feature a UCI category 1 event as part of the program.
