Kai Sakakibara has finished in 19th position at round six of the UCI BMX World Cup held in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. The reigning Australian national champion bowed out of the competition overnight in the quarter final round, finishing fifth in his heat to just miss out on a semi-final spot.
“I was feeling really good today, it’s disappointing I didn’t make it further, but I couldn’t be happier with how I was riding,” said Sakakibara.
It has been a difficult event for Sakakibara, with the Australian rider struggling on the rough track at Santiago del Estero throughout the entirety of the weekend.
Round five saw the Southlake Illawarra BMX club rider manufacture a better result. Sakakibara raced through to the event final and came home in seventh position in what was a strong field of riders that included 2016 Olympic Games gold medallist Connor Fields.
“Overall this weekend I finished eleventh. I was able to gain some valuable UCI points, and that’s really what this trip was all about.”
Sakakibara will now travel back home to Australia where he will prepare to compete at the 2017 NSW State Championships just a short few weeks away on September 30 at Macarthur BMX Club.
