Tickets are now available to one of the biggest awards nights on the Australian calendar, the second instalment of the Australian BMX Hall of Fame Gala Awards Dinner to be held on August 10.
It’s an opportunity for the BMXA family to stop and recognise more of its dedicated members and the extraordinary achievements they have obtained during their time in the sport.
The inaugural gala dinner last year celebrated the induction of five riders to the Hall of Fame – Jamie Hales, Leigh Egan, Paul Addams, Wayne McIntosh and Natarsha Williams.
Alongside inducting more members into the Hall of Fame this year, the event also has the privilege of announcing the 2019 Sam Willoughby Medallist by the man himself – in person!
Joining him on the evening will be his wife and current USA no.1, Alise Willoughby.
The award recognises a rider who has produced outstanding success internationally, domestically and at a state level in a calendar year.
Similar to the traditions of the AFL’s Brownlow medal, NRL’s Dally M Medal and Cricket Australia’s Allan Border Medal, the Sam Willoughby Medal recognises and rewards current Australian riders regardless of age, gender or competition class.
Last year, multiple world and national champion Thomas Tucker took out the top gong just six weeks after he claimed his sixth consecutive world 20” challenge title. In total, the youngster has seven W1 plates to his name courtesy of also winning the 12 & under cruiser event in 2017.
The five nominees for the 2019 Sam Willoughby medal will be announced at the conclusion of 2019 BMXA BAD BOY National Championships in Shepparton on May 25.
Alongside the announcement of the nominees, the Australian BMX Museum will have a strong presence at the nationals.
There will be a pop-up exhibit at the track featuring the career of Sam Willoughby. The exhibition will include the bike he rode to win the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, video highlights of his time in BMX and much more.
There will also be a more comprehensive BMX exhibition at the Shepparton Motor Museum during nationals.
